Phosphorus, calcium and trace minerals, for a few days.

  • Phosphorus first

A short supply of phosphorus, with calcium alongside.

  • Trace minerals for bone

The trace minerals bone and cartilage are built with, in the same liquid.

  • Two calendars

Broilers from day 7, layers in the first week of lay: a few days each time.

Linkaphos: phosphorus, calcium and trace minerals for drinking water

Phosphorus and calcium together, rather than calcium alone. Linkaphos is a liquid mineral supplement for poultry drinking water: phosphorus and calcium, with trace minerals, for a few days, in the phases when demand outruns what the feed supplies.

The problem

The skeleton grows faster than it mineralises

Today’s broiler puts on weight very fast; its skeleton has to keep up, and it mineralises more slowly than it grows. A hen coming into lay builds, within a few weeks, the bone reserve that will supply part of the calcium for her shells. In both phases, the demand for minerals rises suddenly.

The feed covers the average requirement. But when feed intake lags behind demand, or demand rises faster than the formula has been adjusted, a supply through the drinking water tops it up over a few days, on one flock, without touching the formula.

The principle

Minerals in the right ratio, and the matrix toolkit

For bone and shell, the amount of each mineral matters less than the balance between them.

  1. Phosphorus and calcium, together.Phosphorus and calcium together, rather than calcium alone.
  2. The ratio, not the amount.Excess calcium on its own binds phosphorus and phytate in the ration, and can create a phosphorus shortfall where you thought you were doing well.
  3. The matrix toolkit.Trace minerals are the enzymatic toolkit of the bone and cartilage matrix: Linkaphos supplies them alongside the minerals.

Calcium and phosphorus

Calcium and phosphorus ratio in poultry: why it is important

Phosphorus for chickens does far more than build bone: it sits at the heart of every cell’s energy. Calcium builds bone and shell. The two share the gut and the skeleton, and each gets in the other’s way when the balance is broken: too much calcium cuts the share of phosphorus the bird can actually use, and reduces the efficacy of the phytase in the feed.

The right ratio is worked out on the whole ration: a nutritionist sets it in the formula, and the water supply adjusts it rather than redrawing it. That is why Linkaphos brings phosphorus and calcium together, rather than calcium alone.

In layers, the shell is also the job of Linkamax HD, which supplies readily absorbed vitamin D with a soluble calcium, around peak and in late lay. For managing the whole period, see peak and late lay.

When to use it

Two calendars: the broiler and the layer

Linkaphos is used over a few days, at set points in the cycle, following the technical data sheet:

  • Broilers: a first course at the start of fast growth, a second when weight gain speeds up.
  • Layers: in the first week of lay, then at peak and in the last month of lay.

How to use

Prepare, dose, store

Make up the stock solution on the day of use, in a clean tank. The amount of product for the tank depends on the day’s water intake and on the dosing pump’s injection rate. Linkaphos is one of our drinking water supplements; over the same periods, vitamins and amino acids go through Linkastim.

  • Never in the same water as a live vaccine: flush the line, vaccinate, then resume.
  • With another product in the water: check compatibility before combining them; when in doubt, separate them in time.
  • Storage: 24 months, cool, dry and away from light; close tightly.

In practice

Frequently asked questions

Why is the calcium to phosphorus ratio important?

Because calcium and phosphorus get in each other’s way when the balance is broken: excess calcium binds phosphorus and phytate in the ration and cuts the share of phosphorus the bird can use. For bone as for shell, balance is what counts, not the amount of a single mineral.

Linkaphos or Linkamax HD for layers?

Linkaphos balances phosphorus, calcium and trace minerals, at the start of lay, then at peak and in late lay. Linkamax HD supplies calcium and vitamin D for the shell, around peak and in late lay. Both are planned together, alongside the ration.
